If you just want to get a static site up quickly you should use something like Netlify instead. These sites are really low volume so the hosting works out as effectively free. I registered devwhoops. I have also made this work for just a subdomain with no redirects but have left that part out to make this post shorter. The source buckets must be publicly available over HTTP rather than private S3 buckets to allow things like redirects to work. Yes, you do need an entire CloudFront distribution to redirect www.

I put the code needed to create all the moving parts into a single Terraform module that has enough input variables to customize the solution per site.

I use Terragrunt to handle re-using this module and configuring it for each specific site. Three S3 buckets are needed, one for the site content, one for logs and one for the redirect.

The main site bucket index and error documents are configurable as different static sites might need to use these in different ways.

The code above names the bucket after the site domain. The public permissions are below. I find that a lot of Terraform code by volume is specifying policies for resources! AWS Certificate Manager can generate and renew the https certificates for free. It needs proof of domain ownership via the ability to write a CNAME record before it will issue the certificate.

I adapted this article to use DNSimple. This is very handy! The certificates must be in the us-east-1 region. I usually work in eu-west-1 so need to use the Terraform alias support to have a provider in the correct regions. There are two names to validate, the www and non-www version of the apex domain. Now the buckets and the validated certificate resources are setup the next step is to create the CloudFront distributions.

The biggest pain with working with it is how long it takes to make changes when you change something. I saw times between 15 and 30 mins when I was working on this. I would never want a database created in the same stack as application servers or resources as those can change over the life of an application, but the database might not. If your case, you are correct that TF will create the resources if they don't exist, but you misunderstood the context.

TF will create them if they don't exist in the state file, not at AWS. If two stacks try to create the same resource with the same names, stack 1 will create them, stack 2 will try but fail because the resource already exists at AWS. I would separate the security groups and subnet groups into their own module, then use a data source to reference them in the Redshift module.

Is it possible to use a shared cache that re-uses already downloaded modules and their versionsso I don't have to download all of the dependencies for each module instantiation? Collectively it is 10GB of cache. I would be nice to have an option to auto remove cache after execution. I just deleted GB of. By default it should have common directory and use symlink as brikis98 said. Having a flag to create local.

I can't imagine supporting and working on infrastructure with clients or more. I would have to either delete local. One is symlinks already mentioned, second one is proxy and replacing source with adhoc localhost cache repo. Kinda nasty hack.

Unfortunately I don't think I will be able to help to sort this issue. Proxy sounds a bit too hacky. Symlinks are more promising, but not without a lot of complexities and gotchas. We're certainly open to PRs that can think through those issues, but for now, periodically clearing the cache as documented here is hopefully a good-enough workaround.

I'm also interested in this problem. In my case, we have throttled speed to the git server and a fresh pull every time gets slow really fast.
